A city without great pizza places is not a city worth living in. Luckily for us, Richmond has some delicious pizza joints. Nothing is really going to compare to New York Pizza, but there are some close contestants. In this little article, we laid out 10 of the best pizza restaurants in Richmond VA.
These are in no particular order, obviously. These are just a handful of pizza joints that are really, really tasty.
#1 Christian's Pizza
Christian’s Pizza is on a mission to bring you great pizza at an affordable price. What’s the point of ordering pizza if it is expensive? No point at all. But don’t think for a moment that they sacrifice quality for the price. They guarantee that their pizza will be the best thing to grace your mouth.
When you pay them a visit, you will have a selection of 18 pizzas to choose from. And these are huge pizzas that will surely delight and satisfy. In fact, they say their pizzas are 27% bigger than extra-large pizzas at other restaurants while still costing less.
#2 Bottoms Up Pizza
If you are jonesing for some pretty unique pies, then Bottom’s Up is the place to be. They have a variety of signature pizzas that can delight your taste buds and leave you begging for more. One of them is their Bottoms Up Loaded (sausage, ground beef, pepperoni and black olives).
You can enjoy your thick-crusted pizza while sitting on the porch and looking at trains passing by. It is located in Shockoe Bottom, which is a historic area. This is a pretty unique location for enjoying some pizza.
#3 Mary Angela's
Mary Angela’s Pizzeria is one of Richmond’s favorite pizza restaurants to grab some Sicilian-style and New York-style pizza. Plenty of Richmond residents swear by this pizza since they have grown up eating it. And they will also tell you the taste never changes, which is why they keep coming back for more.
When you stop by this fine establishment, try Mary Angela’s special (pepperoni, sausage, green pepper, mushroom and onion). Easily one of the best pizza restaurants in Richmond VA!
#4 8 1/2
If you are in The Fan and looking for some great pizza, then 8 ½ should be your first stop. They also have another location in Churchill, which was opened in 2018 and has quickly become a favorite for locals there. It is operated by the same folks that brought you Mamma Zu’s and Edo’s Squid.
The pizza selection is small: you can only choose the red or white pizza. However, these are arguably the best pizzas you will ever taste.
#5 Belmont Pizzeria
Belmont Pizzeria is located at the Museum District, where you will also find the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. After enjoying the works of Picasso and Fabergé, you can stop by this pizzeria and dig into one of the biggest slices you will ever have.
They have a great selection of pizzas, but you have to try the Belmont Supreme (sausage, pepperoni, ham and veggies). The pizzeria is also open until midnight, which makes it a favorite for night owls.
#6 Mellow Mushroom
Mellow Mushroom is a pizza chain located all over the USA. It was founded in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia, and the deliciousness of its pizza has made it to Richmond. Mellow Mushroom focuses on serving fresh, stone-baked pizzas in a family-friendly and chic environment. This place has a fun psychedelic vibe different than any restaurant we’ve visited.
The best part about Mellow Mushroom is that you can build your own pizza! That’s right, you can build a custom pizza using fresh ingredients (over 20). Not to mention there is also a huge selection of cheese, from mozzarella to ricotta.
#7 Capriccios Italian Restaurant
Capriccios is another pizza joint that serves New York-style pizza to the residents of Richmond. It is a family-friendly place where pizza is served with exceptional customer service. The restaurant is owned by Tina and Frank Capriccio. Frank is Italian-born and raised in New York, which is why the restaurant manages to deliver on its promise of great New York-style pizza.
Pupatella is a restaurant that serves authentic Neapolitan pizzas. It has been certified by the AVPN (Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana). This means the establishment has been recognized as an official restaurant for people looking to dine at a Neapolitan pizzeria.
On top of Neapolitan pizzas, you can have a variety of white pizzas. And if none of that tickles your fancy, you can even build your own custom pizza.
#9 Pizza and Beer of Richmond (PBR)
Is there a better combination than pizza and beer? Probably not! Which is why you should try out PBR for “The Best Damn Pizza in RVA!” You can try any one of their 12 Brick Oven Craft Pizzas and wash it down with their fine selection of ales, lagers, ciders, stouts and wines.
PBR is the ideal place to bring large groups. The atmosphere is great too, with an industrial vibe that blends modern chic with a homey feel. It’s the perfect chill spot for such a perfect combination of food and drink.
If you are looking for a place that specializes in New York-style pizza, then Jo-Jo’s is your go-to restaurant. It is located in downtown Richmond and has a pizza-by-the-slice aesthetic that is common in New York pizza joints. It’s the perfect place to grab a quick bite to eat.
